Rejection

pixnstories-050-copy.jpg

She was waiting for this day. The final interview to get the job. She did research and tried to be mentally alert despite the constant headache. She fixed her hair and makeup and tried to look good and neat. She tried her best to look decent and right for the job.

Once again, she was made to hope, received again a word of false hope telling her they will notify her after the process of shortlisting. But it’s just the same. She did not get the job.

His loan was just recently approved. And the night is young. He called his friend afterwards and asked him to accompany him to a casino. His friend obliged.

It was not his lucky night. The loan was gone after a few hours leaving him and his friend a few pesos for food and fare. They went to another friend’s house to borrow money for tomorrow’s food and fare.

Kapre - Philippine Monster

pixnstories-048-copy.jpg

Philippine folklore tells many things about the kapre. Here is one funny story.

Ed went home at dawn, at around 3am, from a night out (which lasted till the wee hours) with his boss. On his way to the house, he met old man Cris, walking hastily and looking very pale. “Ed, I saw a kapre in front of your house, near the tree. He was even smoking cigar!”

Now kapres are known to dwell on top of trees smoking cigars. They are big, very tall, dark and hairy creatures known to scare people.

“Where did you see it, Mang Cris?” Ed asked.

“There,” pointing with his head but not bothering to turn, almost trembling.

Ed had goosebumps but he had to fight the growing fear. He suddenly remembered his father’s tales. Though he did not entirely believe the stories about those monsters, he cannot help but think what if it is possible.

When he walked in front of the tree where Mang Cris alledgely saw the monster, hairs raised up to the back of his neck. He hastened to reach the door of the house, struggling to fight the fear within and continued inserting the key. He silently turned the doorknob not to wake everybody in the house.

Ed wanted to laugh out loud. There in the sofa was his son’s friend, long hair, big, and dark.

The next morning, he told his son the story and his son asked his friend if he went out at 3am to smoke. He said yes.

“I therefore conclude that there are no kapres,” said Ed laughing.

Rubber Shoes

The family cannot even afford to buy a school pair of shoes. What he has is an old pair of rubber shoes.

He consoles himself with the fact that he was chosen as candidate for the essay contest in English. It was a grueling half-day, then the announcement of the winners came.

It did not even surprise him that he won first place. Then everybody was congratulating him. One of them asked, “Hey, you won! Why are you not smiling?”

“Because my shoes are smiling.”

Fake

How beautiful she looks. Every time she passes by, I cannot help but look. And everyday she has a new dress. She almost always does not repeat her dresses in two weeks. How I adore how she looks.

Ahh… One day I am going to walk her home. I am slowly getting hooked with the grace, with the beauty. She must be a daughter of a rich man. She looks elegant.

(A week passed. In a squatter’s area where he was doing a community service.)

Wha..? That girl from the school. Why is she here? She’s doing a community service, too? I am going to follow her. She’s not even beautiful, she must be down-to-earth doing these humble acts of service.

(In front of a shanty.)

“Were you able to get money, mother?”

“I haven’t gone to Mrs. Fuentes yet, daughter.”

“What? I have to buy that dress. You have to go to her tonight and tell her you need the money.”

What is this? I was fooled by a fake.
